GOING GLOBAL: DallasBasketball.com has been a partner in Donnie Nelson’s pet project, the Global Games, since the tournament’s inception. This year’s event is more high-profile than ever, because not only is the Mavs’ summer-league team involved (Diop! Moe! JJB! Pops!) but the Chinese National Team is as well.
Yi! Sun! Del Harris knowing everything there is to know about ‘em!
The Global Games begin Sunday and continues through July 7. The Mavs team opposes the Chinese team on Tuesday. All games are at SMU’s Moody Coliseum. Puerto Rico, Africa and Argentina also have entries, and there is a US 19-and-under team featuring some local kids, including Robert Byakundi and Alex Malone.
Sun Yue is a 6-9 point guard. “He’s the Chinese Magic Johnson,’’ says an intrigued Donnie Nelson, and indeed, he is likely on the Mavs’ second-round wish list.
Yi Jianlian is a lottery pick-level player, an athletic 7-footer. Harris – the Mavs assistant who once oversaw the Chinese team – raves about Yi. As DB.com has been reporting, Yi is certain to be chosen by the sixth pick, to Milwaukee. Golden State is trying to swap up to get him. And of course, Donnie’s Mavs are intrigued by him as well.
