Another title for 2009 Heroes - 2008-05-13
Capped by Mesquite junior Cory Remunken's exclamation-point dunk, Dallas Heroes 2009 won its third championship in five tournaments by defeating the Arkansas Wings for the Sooner Cager Classic title May 4 in Norman, Okla.
Assistant coach Dorian Harris - subbing for head coach Collin Wade, who had state track meet commitments - said rebounding and defense made all the difference. "They decided to take more pride on the glass. We were much better on the boards, and we also got the timely defensive stops we needed in order to beat these talented teams," Harris said. "When we rebound and defend, we are tough to beat."
Said Plano West junior Tyler Melville: "I am sore and tired, but it feels good to have this gold medal around my neck, knowing we earned it."
Heroes 2009 improved to 27-2 overall after rolling through the Oklahoma tournament that included tradition-rich regional programs such as St. Louis Elite and Team Texas.
